Some of it worked great like the freedom of exploration into bigger areas, the mount being easily available, the different caves and finds you can make, the way the story can be told with the world in a much better way, but it also suffered because to me there is a tightness to the Souls level design and shortcut that are just missing there. It was a souls styles game that had an open world. Mainly how magic works and interacts with the world and how you can game some system by using barrels or other world hijinks.Įlden Ring? I loved the game, but it also felt like a step back in many ways. We'll see how the system in Starfield work, but I think that if both Bethesda and someone like Arkane could implement a few more of the intricacies of Larian game they would be better. I like the open design of BG3 and other Larian games and I wish more games would adapt some of it. Nintendo themselves already cited Skyrim and Minecraft as an inspiration yet people still take the wrong thing from statements like that. People on this site just can't help make everything a contest and nuances like this get completely lost in the process. It also did them in a way no games before have packaged in such a way, and to a level of polish that most AAA studios strive towards and that's on top of having real-time physics in the skeleton of the game itself.Īll those games listed DO NOT actually do what BoTW did, and BoTW does not necessarily mirror any of them. Zelda OoT showed us what a lock-on system on a gamepad with on stick would look like, Souls showed us what mastery of such a system would look like.īoTW took an amalgamation of systems and very open-ended world-open designs to form a new paradigm for the series that saw it account for 1/3 of the entire franchise's sales across decades. No one is looking at the Souls series saying, "Well, Zelda was doing 3D lock-on combat on the N64, so I'm not seeing what's so special about these games." It's all about refinement and reimaging things. It doesn't really matter who did these things first.? That's not how discussions of inspiration work.
